Week 3: Wheels

The image of the birth control pill pack fit the visual for “wheels” as well as the concepts of cycle and freedom. One of my ongoing projects is an altered book of feminist literature by Nancy Friday. Her book is perfect for altering because it is thick and covers so many topics of interest to women: beauty, sexuality, mothers, etc. When there are good quotes, I may leave those pages in tact, but there are also long passages where she rambles. So for this particular spread on The invention of The Pill, I whipped out the black gesso and went to town. I incorporated an image printed on transparency and journaling about how although it was three male scientists who invented The Pill, it was a woman named Margaret Sanger who pushed for it and helped to raise funds for research. I stamped the background with a variety of floral stamps and Versamark and dusted over with Pearl Ex. I embellished further with sequins flying out of the pill pack to give the impression of a new world opening up to women. I also wrote some of the words to the Jefferson Airplane “free love” anthem of the 60s: “Don’t You Want Somebody to Love.” I intend to do a few more spreads in this section of the book that are more personal with my own experiences and thoughts.
Note: edited to add a photo taken at a better angle to show the metallic stuff ;)
