Week 2: my coNcept on RISK

i decided to use my near-drowning experience when i was a young girl as a basis for my CONCEPT OF RISK. dad was swimming at the beach and i ran after him when no one was looking. a huge wave engulfed me and i was tossed about in a mad frenzy. my mother chased after me and was screaming for help and everyone was searching for me in the white wash. luckily i wasn’t washed out to sea…

the photo in the right-hand corner is one of my mother,my big sister and me {the one STRUGGLING to get out of the water}. after the accident i was TERRIFIED of the beach. we all STRUGGLE somewhat when we’re faced with something NEW and are facing a RISK of any kind. my journaling reflects my FEAR of stepping into a VOLATILE sea {moody, deep, unknown} and taking the RISK of being tossed about and losing CONTROL with the possibility of being sucked under without a SAFETY raft. this experience spills over into MY VIEW on taking RISKS. I struggle and refrain because i don’t want to lose control and possibly drown. the photo in the right bottom corner is of me at the beach sitting on the SIDELINES.

a little explanation on technique: i printed the photo on a page torn out of an old book and painted over it with a mixture of red acrylic paint and clear glaze so the words and photos would show through. To add texture to the background page, after painting the page with a mixture of yellow and red acrylic paint, i wadded up a plastic mesh bag, dabbed it in the mixture of red and yellow acrylic paint and then dabbed it on my page.

TECHNIQUE: printed the photo on a piece of handmade giftwrapping paper. i framed the photos with pieces of metal
mesh and dabbed red acrylic paint over the metal

TECHNIQUUE: took a triangled piece of metal mesh, placed it in the corner of the photo and dabbed red acrylic paint over it for texture
