Hands On Art -- Week One

This is a page that was inspired by the week one prompt. I was thinking about how I could visually introduce myself to someone I hadn’t met, which led to thoughts of the first thing that I often do when introducing myself in the real world – extend my hand. But how would a hand tell anyone anything about me, if I wasn’t attached to it? Well, perhaps if I provided a helpful how-to-read-palms chart, they could read between the lines.

So I had my husband take a picture of my hand, then I scribbled some arcane symbols on various papers and scanned them. I layered copies of the scribbles onto the photo of my hand, and then decided to be more blatant about the whole thing and add words describing myself: “Writer, Workaholic, Snarky, Creative, Loner, Bibliophile, Traveler, Gypsy, Does Not Play Well With Others, Techno-Geek, Pagan, Tendency to Brood, Obsessive, Curious, Creative, Psychic, Empathetic, Stubborn…” that about sums me up. I then subjected the image to various indignities in Photoshop, and added a background and a border from Dover’s Henna Designs book. I may go back into this and add more stuff later as the spirit moves me … or not.

I expect to work primarily in digital for this project, as I’m comfortable with the “medium” but it still challenges me. (Does anyone really know Photoshop?). I do tend to paint/draw/write/distress material for my digital projects so I also get to enjoy the more tactile thrill of mucking around with supplies. I plan on printing my pages out onto watercolor paper and binding them… maybe. Not really sure about that yet.

In real life I’m a writer, usually of tech and/or travel stories. I live in NYC. I look forward to seeing everyone’s work over the next few months. Thank you, Shimelle!

Intro 101

Hi my name is Vikki and this is my first art journal. I am primarily a scrapper and cardmaker and I’m hoping that this will help me to be free-er on my pages. I also am heavy into photography (as are many of you, i’m sure :) and thought that this would help me to look at my surroundings in a new way. I live on Long Island, NY with my husband, bird, 2 turtles and many fishies. Interesting that I grew up here, moved to boston and swore I’d NEVER come back and the apartment we moved into is actually right around the block from where I lived growing up. By day, I am an elementary school band teacher, by afternoon and evening I am a grad student getting a degree in Wind Band Conducting. I am having a BLAST!!! I don’t have pictures of my space or stuff to post right now, I have had my brothers both here for the Holidays, found out that a friend is coming into town tomorrow and went back to school today, so my place is a bit chaotic. However, they all just left to go look at video games, so I have at least the next hour to myself. :) Love them dearly, but its nice to hear nothing but quiet. I am looking forward to getting to know everyone and be inspired by your work!
ttfn,
Vikki

Intro - my name is Tracey (TopCat76)

My name’s Tracey and I’m really looking forward to getting started on this, I think an art journal is something I’ve been looking for for a long time. I’m always doodling and making lists, collecting “stuff” (tickets, postcards, articles, you name it I’ll keep it!!) so this seems ideal.
IRL I work in London for an Insurance Brokers (yawn) in my daydreams I’d do something much more creative, my new year’s resolution is to change jobs this year, not sure I’ll get to do something creative but anything has to be better than where I am right now!! I see my journal as my creative outlet and I’m very excited by the prospect.

Pics are of my journal – rather daunting as a blank book, hopefully it won’t stay that way for long! and my desk, which I’ve finally got organised – I love being able to spend time here (can’t say the same for my desk at work!!) I have a thing for ribbons and buttons so I expect they’ll feature greatly in whatever I come up with… when at school I was pretty good at art but the real world and grown up life has, until recently, stemmed my creative juices. I found scrap booking about 18 months ago and feel so much better for it.

Looking forward to sharing with you and getting inspired by all your work.

Hi

This is my first attempt at an online course to and am looking forward to the challenge. I have kept sketch books before with some journalling in them but the images are not a part of the writing so it will be nice to combine them.
For a living I design and sell knitting kits so will also see this as a kick start to some of my design work hopefully and I would like to incorperate as much colour as I can into my entries.

This is my work space, I apologise for the mess, don’t seem to be able to create in a tidy way. I do like the idea of having a packed lunch box so me and my journal can travel.
I’m not sure which of the books on the table I am going to use for my journal one is on the small side and the other a little big, they are both photo albums picked up really cheaply in the sales and have really strong card pages as I want to try and work into them with stitch and so on.
I’m looking forward to getting to know you all

Intro

Hi, I’m Annette, from South Texas. I am new to online classes (never been involved in an online chat!), new to art journals, although I have been an admirer for some time now. Thought I would just jump in with both feet and get my creative juices flowing. I love art supplies and am excited about this new way of communicating; new to me, that is. So anyway, I work in a law firm IRL, advanced amateur photographer IRRL :), and now beginner art journaler. The challenge is intriguing, to see if I can artfully compose life on a page …. can’t draw anything more than a stick figure … so this will be an interesting excursion. From what I can tell, you don’t have to be able to draw, just create. So here is a sample pic of my beginning journal tools, (the room for my computer is dark for photo editing purposes)—my scanner is a big part of everything I do (would be a little lost without it), the rubber alphas are in almost every layout and the pens, well that goes without saying…I LOVE PENS!

Introduction...

My name is Tree – I took part in the last Art Journal challenge and really enjoyed it. I started out life card making many, many moons ago, moved onto scrapping which is I love and then began altering things a few years ago. I like doing the journals because often there’s something I want to say or record that just doesn’t fit into one of my scrapbooks and this is a great place for me to say those things…it’s also a great place for me to play with my stuff, lol!
Anyway, here is my pic of my essential items. I’ve painted my journal Secret Garden green, it’s a 7 Gypsies one that was lying around in my cupboard, it has black pages inside and some little inclusions like tags and envelopes which I thought might make for some different types of entry this time. I also have rubber stamps, ink, paint, permanent black pen, craft knife, foam ‘brush’ and my corner rounder oh and blossoms and ribbon which seem to be the main type of embellishment that I use anywhere these days, lol!
